You should avoid getting water in your contacts from:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swimming pools and hot tubs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The shower&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lakes and rivers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sea&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-risks-of-swimming-with-contacts-in\"><strong>What are the risks of swimming with contacts in?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dry-eyes_1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"woman has eye infections from swimming with contacts in\" class=\"wp-image-32294\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been swimming with contact lenses in, you may risk developing several sight-threatening conditions:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eye infections (like corneal ulcers and Acanthamoeba keratitis) can lead to permanent vision loss&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye inflammation from the lens sticking to your eye can cause corneal abrasions or scratches&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.com.au\/thelook\/how-to-manage-dry-eye-symptoms-and-eye-allergies-every-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dry eye syndrome<\/a> from getting freshwater, saltwater, or chlorinated water in your eyes can worsen existing eye conditions&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Water from the sea, lakes, and rivers can be more dangerous than pool water because freshwater and saltwater can be contaminated with bacteria and pollutants that aren\u2019t killed off by pool chemicals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most vicious water-borne bacteria called Acanthamoeba can provoke a rare but severe eye infection (known as Acanthamoeba keratitis) that may inflame your cornea and cause blindness if left untreated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you experience eye irritation after you accidentally swam or showered with your contacts in, book an appointment with an eye doctor as soon as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 id=\"signs-of-an-eye-infection\"><strong>What are the signs of an eye infection?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-2.jpg\" alt=\"woman removes contact lenses and flushes her eyes with artificial tears or lubricating drops after water gets in her contacts when swimming\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Keep a look out forstubborn symptoms that could be a sign of an eye infection:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Itchy, watery, red, painful, or swollen eyes&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eye discharge&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blurry vision&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitivity to light&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The feeling that something is in your eye&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If water gets in your contacts when swimming: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gently take them out&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Throw them away immediately to reduce the risks of eye discomfort and infection &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flush your eyes with <a href=\"\/thelook\/how-to-put-in-eye-drops\/#different-types-of-eyedrops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial tears or lubricating drops<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s best to stay contact lens free for the rest of the day and wear your glasses, so your eyes can breathe and heal. Remember: if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, we recommend seeing an eye doctor promptly \u2013 book an appointment at a Clearly store near you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"in-swimming-pools\"><strong>Can you wear contact lenses in a pool?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>No, wearing contact lenses in a swimming pool will put your eye health at risk. Even though chlorine kills bacteria, it doesn\u2019t kill it all. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pool water can easily get into your eyes and contacts when swimming, and having bacteria and chlorine attached to your contacts can make your eyes more vulnerable to irritation and infection if you don\u2019t remove them immediately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wearing-goggles\"><strong>Can you wear contact lenses with goggles?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog1-.jpg\" alt=\"woman avoids wearing contact lenses with goggles\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p>You may find sources online in which some people think wearing goggles with soft <a href=\"\/contact-lenses\/daily-contacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">daily disposable lenses<\/a> can be a hack for wearing contacts underwater. But the water protective level of goggles can be hit or miss, and there\u2019s no guarantee that water won\u2019t seep in. It\u2019s best to wear swimming goggles made with your prescription if you spend a great deal of time in the water. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you forget to remove your contacts while swimming, keep your eyes closed when your goggles are flooded to prevent water from getting into your eyes and remove your contacts right away. If your lenses stick to your eyes, use <a href=\"\/contact-lenses\/lens-care\/eye-drops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rewetting drops<\/a>, and then throw your contacts away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"waterproof-contacts\"><strong>Can you buy waterproof contact lenses for swimming?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t get waterproof contact lenses because contacts need to be breathable and permeable for your eye\u2019s cornea to get enough oxygen.
